New European border formalities coming next year: what you need to know?

You may have heard that new European border requirements are on their way but as yet there is no hard start date so nothing to worry about yet. Below is an overview of whats coming and I will post updates as and when thing start to take effect.

EES the Entry-Exit System registers all travellers from third-countries (including the UK), each time they enter or exit an EU border. This will be taking your picture and having your fingerprints recorded.

ETIAS the European Travel Information and Authorisation System an ETIAS is an electronic travel authorisation for visa-exempt, third-country nationals (including the UK) travelling to European countries. It is an authorisation to travel and can be compared with the US ESTA or Canadian eTA.

An ETIAS is not a visa, it is an authorisation to travel and is valid for up to three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

When will EES and ETIAS enter into force? No dates have yet been confirmed yet but EES is expected to enter into force early 2025 and ETIAS will start six months after that.

How and when do travellers apply for an ETIAS?

The application system will open once ETIAS has been formally introduced with travellers applying via an ETIAS mobile app (currently in development) or via the ETIAS webpage

on the European Commission website.

How much will the ETIAS cost?

The application fee for an ETIAS will cost 7 Euros.
