Cambodia – Temples and mountains

Exploring Cambodia: Ancient Temples, Kulen Mountains & Cultural Wonders

In October, Fiona and I embarked on an unforgettable adventure to Siem Reap, Cambodia. This journey whisked us back in time, immersing us in a world of ancient temples and the serene beauty of the Kulen Mountains.

Cambodia is a land of contrasts, shaped by its rich history and the resilience of its people. Our local guide proved invaluable giving us insights into Cambodia’s deep cultural and historical roots. The stories of the Khmer Empire, the impact of the Khmer Rouge, and the enduring traditions of its people made the experience profoundly enriching.

The temples were the heart of our journey. Of course we visited Angkor Wat, the crown jewel of Cambodian architecture. Despite a torrential downpour obscuring the sunrise, the spiritual energy and monumental scale of the temple left a lasting impression.

At Angkor Thom, we were greeted by playful wild monkeys, adding a lively touch to the awe-inspiring surroundings. Climbing the 180 steps at Prasat Roum, reminiscent of the ancient structures of Peru and Mexico but far older, was both a challenge and a privilege.

The temples of Cambodia are many and diverse, each with its own character and allure. Some highlights from our trip were:

Koh Ker Temple: A recently recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site as of September 2023. This ancient city, hidden deep in the jungle, offered a peaceful escape from tourist crowds.

Beng Mealea: A temple lost to time, its ruins embraced by the jungle. Walking through this site felt like stepping into a mystical realm where nature reclaims history.

Ta Prohm: Made famous as the backdrop for the original Tomb Raider movie. The intertwining roots of giant trees and crumbling structures created a cinematic spectacle.

Each temple, whether restored or overgrown, told its own story. With about 20 temples visited during our trip, no two were alike in design or material, dispelling any notion of “too many temples!”

On our final day, we ventured to the Kulen Mountains, a haven of natural beauty. The breathtaking views, a giant reclining Buddha, and the cascading waterfall created an atmosphere of tranquillity and calm.

The day concluded with a boat trip to the floating village on the Tonlé Sap (Great Lake). Observing the resourceful lifestyle of Khmer families living on the water provided a glimpse into their unique daily lives, a testament to their adaptability and connection to nature.

Cambodia is a land of contrasts, where ancient grandeur meets the shadows of its more recent history. For us this trip was a blend of discovery, adventure, and connection. Despite the challenges of the past, the people are warm and welcoming and whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply someone seeking adventure, Cambodia offers an unforgettable experience.
